My style icons

First of all, I want to thank Isis from The Fedora Lounge for this blog post inspiration. Sometimes I can't decide on what to write about, and I think this is a great suggestion.

Coco Chanel.

Now this woman had an interesting life. I am not going in-depth about it now, but anyone who's interested should watch the movie Coco Avant Chanel. I also know there was something shady going on in WWII, but since that's all rumors I give her the benefit of the doubt. (unlike Hugo Boss)

I would literally die for a Chanel suit. I am not really a labelyouknowwhat, but that suit is so elegant and timeless. LOVE it. The original line she designed is still the influence for modern Chanel designs. Therefore I also like a lot of the new designs by Karl Lagerfeld.

Dale Evans

I've got this fascination with 'glamour cowgirls', who were very popular in the 40's and 50's. (Especially in the USA) One of my favorites is Dale Evans Rogers. (married with Roy Rogers) She can ride, sing, shoot and always has a clever answer to anything. But just look at those outfits! Yeeeeeehaw :D

Betty Grable

Betty Grable's hair is pure art. I've used her pictures many times for inspiration, and still do. She actually wore a lot of hairpieces, since her own hair was very fine.

Anyway that doesn't make a difference to the art that is Betty's hair.

I hope you enjoyed this post!

Oh darn it!

I had my second check-up a little earlier, since there are no improvements developing regarding the knee issue. The doctor said that he has to operate, and I kind of expected that already. So I had to fill out a form with 47 questions about my current health, and had my blood pressure checked. They also wanted to draw some blood for testing, since I have problems with my thyroid. (it is working a little too fast) So in the last two days I spent a total of nearly three hours in hospital.
Now I have to wait for the moment that they will call with the date of the operation.

Oh, and remember my complaint about my work? My boss called me and said she didn't want to offer me a new contract. I am not surprised at all, and actually very relieved to be honest. So now I am back to square one without a job. Maybe I'll try once more at the barber shop....

This was my update for now, I'll try to find a nice subject to write about for my next post. What do you guys want to read about? Please let me know, I appreciate any input.

WWII hero: Jannetje Johanna Schaft

One of the most famous wartime heroes in Holland was a female. A young girl that went by the name of Hannie Schaft. She was born as Jannetje Johanna Schaft on September 16th 1920 in Haarlem and got killed by the Germans on April 17th 1945 in Bloemendaal. Here is a little history lesson and tribute to a remarkable woman.
source picture:hannieschaft.nl

Born and raised as a social democrat, Jo had a strong sense of justice. She was a very bright girl and even went to the University of Amsterdam in 1938 to study rights.
In University she had several Jewish friends, so when the war broke out she noticed the different treatment between Jewish and non-Jewish people. Two of them were Philine Polak and Sonja Frenk. In 1942 Jo stole two identification documents of two non-Jewish woman from a swimming pool for them. This was the start of all her heroic deeds she had done.
When the Germans in 1943 forced everyone in University to sign a loyalty declaration, Jo decided to stop studying and moved back in with her parents in Haarlem. She took Philine and Sonja with her to hide them. Jo joined the resistance Raad Van Verzet to fight against the Germans and traitors, she didn't inform her parents for their own safety. Sonja tried to escape to Switzerland, but she got betrayed and died in Auschwitz.
In the Raad Van Verzet were also sisters Freddie and Truus Oversteegen and Jan Boonekamp who Jo admired.

Jan Boonekamp
Her first assignment was to shoot a man from the Sicherheitsdienst, but the gun didn't go off. It was a test, and she became Hannie instead of Johanna. From that day on she joined in on several attacks on Germans and NSB'ers.
June 8th 1944, together with Jan Boonekamp she shot Piet Faber (NSB).
June 21th 1944, Jan Boonekamp got killed in a gunfire while attacking W.M. Ragut. Hannie didn't know Jan was hit, and after finding out he died she became depressed.
September 5th 1944, a failed attempt to kill Willemsen. (a police officer)
March 1 1945, Willem Zirkzee (NSB) got shot by Hannie and Truus.
March 15th 1945, Hannie and Truus shot Ko Langendijk (Sicherheitsdienst)

On the 21st of March 1945 Hannie got arrested for selling illegal newspapers. A German officer recognized her as the girl with the red hair. The girl with the red hair was seen so many times after an attack, it must be her.
She got shot on the 17th of April 1945 in Bloemendaal. The first shot missed her, on which she replied: "I can shoot much better". That remark went to down the wrong way with Maarten Kuiper (NSB and SS) who shot his entire ammo from his machine gun empty on her.

On November 27th 1945 she got buried again with military honors on the Eerebegraafplaats Bloemendaal. In 1946 she received a Medal Of Freedom and Het Verzetskruis 1940-1945.

Hannie will never be forgotten, you can still visit her grave in Overveen.

When things aren't what you expected...

There are a few things that have happened since I announced the news about kinki.
I have moved in with my boyfriend and we are living together now for 5 months.
We are happy, and even got a little dog.

It's a pure bred Chihuahua and we named him Diablo. Big name for a small dog, haha!

My work at the salon is not what I imagined. Instead of cutting I have to clean the entire day, and if I'm lucky I can dye a customer's hair. We get training once a week, but I don't get to do anything else than cutting long hair. It's such a pity since I know a lot more than that. Actually it's frustrating! I am 24 years old, and doing easy chores. This is not what I expected at all. I get that everyone needs training, but not the same thing for 4 months over and over again. After such a training I get comments like: ' yeah you did a great job'. When I ask if I get to cut men's hair any time soon they say: 'No, you have to get the basics of long hair first'. Like how many times does it take? I have my diploma, it's not that I got for doing nothing. Anyway, you get my point.

Another unfortunate thing is that I slipped and fell on the street a couple of weeks ago. I had to be picked up by ambulance to get me to the first aid. I spent over 3 hours there but nothing seemed to be broken. My knee hurt really bad, so there might be something ripped inside. They gave me crotches and I had to rest. A week later I had to return to the hospital for a check up. The doctor told me to take it easy for 4 weeks and then I have to come back again. Well I can tell you, it's not looking good. I can't go up or down the stairs normally. If I put weight on my left leg it hurts like a you know what. Even when I sit on a chair or whatever and I want to get up and shift my weight the wrong way, the same thing happens. So now I have to wait to March 13th to get my second check up.

So that my rant for now!

I will leave you with some music, thanks for reading!

It's been a while...

I have been busy, and I am sorry for the huge delay!
Let's start with the England pictures.

Holiday 2011.

We went by ferry from Calais to Dover, and we brought our own car...our 1951 GMC pickup truck.

On our way to Brighton we passed by this vintage shop which unfortunately was closed :( Look at those shoes!! *drool* Wesley made a video with his phone so I can drool some more, and maybe one day I'll return there.

Yay Brighton! We went to some thrift stores there, love it!

Oh and this shop went for some serious advertising, look at those sewing machines pretty neat huh :)

We also paid a visit to the museum Yesterday's World in Battle:
(afterwards we had tea and scones mmmm)

 Chapel down vineyard:

Some random pictures, I've got more pictures but I picked just a few to show you.
( I am not blonde anymore though)

Last but not least, the white cliffs of Dover ;)

Good news!

I DID IT!
I am hired at the salon. Whoohooooo!
I'm so happy! Finally I get to do what I love the most, making people happy and beautiful :)

Here I am at work...still all nervous but smiling.
So excited and curious about what I'm going to learn from the kinki team.

Now I still have a lot of photos in store for you, so I'll start of with some pics of the Brian Setzer gig I went to with Wesley. It was amazing, I stood in front and he even gave me his plectrum :D He played with the rockabilly riot. So now I have seen him in all set-ups. Stray Cats, Orchestra and Rockabilly riot!
Too bad he didn't do a singing session.

Next post will contain photos I made during my stay in England.
Goodnight y'all!

donderdag 1 september 2011

As promised.

A lot of things have happened in my life recently.
The most important one, is that I have quit my job at the supermarket.
This means that I am going to move in with my boyfriend! Also, I have a shot to
prove myself at the kinki hairdressing salon. (www.kinki.nl)

I have improved my hairdressing skills, and I am a lot faster with haircuts since I finished school.

Of course we went to England! Brighton certainly has changed over the years, and it's busier with tourists than ever. But it was nice to come back there. I just love the seaside. We visited a lot of vintage shops as well, but a lot of it was more 80's style. We also payed a visit to Yesterday's world at Battle. It is a museum where they have recreated the life of the past from 1900's till the 1970's.
Picture post will come soon. Another exciting thing we did was going to a village fest in Iden. You must believe that the Brits are the nicest people you have ever met! They don't care how you look and what or who you are, they are always in for a nice chat. No judging, no rudeness, just polite and civil.
So we spent an entire day at the fest, and there also was a flea market. I got myself some 1940's magazines, a 1950's travel alarm, a 1950's can opener and a Vince Ray shirt. Wesley and I split up at the market to be sure we would be the first if we have spotted anything we would like. He came back with a present for me: a 1930's men's razor! in perfect condition and intact. Isn't he the sweetest man on earth?

Now I must tell you a story about the magazines. I bought them from a middle aged woman, who didn't seem to care much about the items. While I was browsing around, I found the alarm clock from the 50's which was sold by an elderly woman. The second time I came back with Wesley and he spotted the can opener. I told the woman we love 40' and 50's stuff and I showed her the magazines I bought. She looked at them and said: ' Ah! I remember those, I still have them at home. I have a great idea, write down your address and I'll send them to you.' I was so surprised and excited, she didn't even want money for it. So 1 week later a package arrived with a lot of 40's movie magazines inside! Such a sweet lady! It is too bad she didn't write her address on a note or the package, because I would like to thank her personally.

I have so much to tell, but it would not make sense in one big post.
I am also planning to post new hair tutorials, so stay blogged!

Till' we meet again!
